How Do I Get Rid Of Groundhogs?

The best method is trapping and removal. If you simply block off their holes, they will dig them out again. They can't be poisoned. They can be live trapped in cage traps or caught in lethal body grip traps. Learn More...

Groundhog Behavior:

Groundhogs are diggers. They excavate tunnels and burrows underground, in which they live and raise young. The tunnel may have up to five entrances and 50 feet of total tunnel distance. They create a den to live in, and to hibernate in. They are primarily active during the daytime. They can climb and swim, but they mostly stay in fields, foraging. When they sense danger, they retreat for the tunnel. Woodchucks can create a wide variety of vocal noises. They grow fat during the summer, lethargic by autumn, and in winter, they hibernate. They emerge in spring and start the mating process.

Nuisance Concerns:

Woodchucks are considered agricultural pests, since they love to eat a wide variety of crops. However, their burrowing habits often cause a bigger problem. Horses can break their legs by stepping into burrows, and when a groundhog digs under a house or deck, the removal of soil can undermine the foundation. Call Trapper Jack Now! 615-469-6000

Groundhog Biology:

Groundhogs (Marmota monax) are rodents, and adults average 8-10 pounds. They give birth in spring to 3-6 young. They can live up to six years in the wild. They are primarily herbivorous, eating a wide variety of plants.

Can't I Just Use a Repellant?

Many people try various repellents to get rid of groundhogs - everything from mothballs to fox or coyote urine. However, none of these are effective. The only sure means of woodchuck control is trapping and removal.

Groundhog Diseases:

No important diseases associated with groundhogs. Learn More...

I needed to keep rats out of my house and hired them to seal up all their entry points. I got several bids and theirs was significantly lower. Once they finished their work, I had no more trouble with rats. They're very easy to deal with. And always responded promptly to any questions.I had.

Found bats roosting in my attic…A LOT OF BATS. Called multiple companies for quotes and not only was Trapper Jack the most transparent, affordable and thorough, the team was kind, understanding and thoughtful through the entire process. I had no idea I couldn’t just call and have them removed. As a protected species, both federally and locally, I was forced to live with the situation for over a month, including a possible maternity colony having babies in my attic turned maternity ward AND the dreaded bat bugs made their way into my living area. Trapper Jack explained everything in depth, did as much work as they could prior to legally being able to exclude the bats (including ridge guards in most areas, extensive clean-up and answering my never ending questions and concerns). From my first call with Greg who put me in contact with Drew, I could not have been more pleased. The installers were efficient and kind. Drew went over and above as he knew I was beyond stressed. 6 weeks later, I can say I am bat free, fully restored/cleaned and have ridge guards in place so bats cannot get back in. Thank you so much, Drew and the Trapper Jack team!

Ben did a great job in getting the squirrel and bird out of my attic. I forgot the guys name that closed off the hole and replaced the facing board, but he did a great job as well. I can now sleep in peace!

Ben was friendly, punctual, knowledgeable, and a great communicator! We got pictures along the way and knew exactly what he was doing and when, which was reassuring because the work had to be done while we were out of town. Excellent company to work with, fair prices, highly recommend!

Trapper Jack was suggested to me by a good friend who had used them successfully several times. I had been dealing with a pretty severe rodent problem in my home and in spite of working with a pest control company was not having success. I met with Drew and he immediately came up with suggestions and solutions and we quickly begin making positive progress. I have since worked with other members of the company and I’m so pleased with their knowledge ,their friendliness and their dedication to helping me resolve what has been a pretty stressful situation . their prices are very reasonable, especially given the tough nature of this line of work. We are seeing in the light at the end of the tunnel, and I will continue to use them once this problem is taken care of and use their guidance to help me going farther. They have been awesome and I have happily given their name to neighbors and friends.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs) - Groundhog Removal

How much damage can groundhogs cause?

Groundhog burrows can undermine foundations, decks, and retaining walls.

What's the most effective way to remove groundhogs?

Live trapping followed by burrow filling. We also seals foundation gaps to prevent them from burrowing back under structures.

Can I use repellents instead of trapping?

Repellents provide temporary relief at best. The only permanent solution is trapping and exclusion.

When are groundhogs most active?

Spring through early fall. They hibernate in winter, but new groundhogs will find the same burrow the following spring if it isn't filled.
